Sit Down At The Piano, Relax, And Start Playing Music That Actually Sounds Good...

By Following A Simple, Repeatable Process That Let's You
Explore Music Without Overwhelm
(Even If You’ve Never Felt Confident Before)

In the video below, I break this simple process down so you can see how to play in a way that feels manageable, musical, and genuinely enjoyable at the piano. I’ll also show you how you can learn and apply it in more depth if it feels right for you.

Play Video

If you’ve ever felt stuck at the piano… unsure what to play, worried it won’t sound good, or overwhelmed by how much there seems to be to learn… what you’ve just seen is an alternative.

I call this approach the Room Technique.

It’s the foundation Creative Piano Patterns is built on.

Or simply scroll on to learn more about the approach.

I sounded so good!"

"The other day, my daughter came into the room just to check if the music she heard was coming from me or from something else.

"She couldn't believe it was me because it sounded so good! So, yeah, the piano patterns definitely help.

"I reckon it would take 2 years to sound good. I never thought I could play anything remotely as nice as this!

"So, so glad I found this course. Now I play piano every day. And even if it's just 5 minutes, now I remember a pattern and play it smoothly. BRILLIANT!"

"I didn't know you knew how to play piano.
It sounds really good!"

"Even when I only have 5-10 minutes, I sit at my piano every day. I quickly practice a few of your patterns.

"When my parents visited recently, my dad heard me play and said... I didn't know you knew how to play the piano. It sounds really good!"

Creative,

For a long time growing up, piano felt frustrating for me.

So frustrating that I actually quit.

I was taught in the traditional way… beginner pieces nobody really wants to play, theory I didn’t know how to use, and endless drills that sounded, well, exactly like you’d expect - drills.

There are important skills buried in that approach, and it works well for some people.
But I always wanted to use the piano to play and create music I actually liked.

Instead it was learn, learn, LEARN. Do this then do that. I was never “allowed” to enjoy the instrument.

The result was that I could follow instructions, but I didn’t feel free or musical at the piano.

So I stopped playing altogether and picked up the… dun dun duuuunnnn… electric guitar instead.

And something unexpected happened.

Creative Piano Patterns 2 Joseph Sykora

Very quickly, I was exploring sounds, writing music, and enjoying the process again.

Not because I suddenly knew more, but because the way I was learning gave me access to the music underneath the techniques.

I’d sit for hours just playing as time disappeared… a freedom I’d never experienced on the piano.

Years later, when I returned to piano and finally started to love it, I realised something important.

The problem wasn’t me and it wasn’t a lack of ability.

It was the way I was taught. And I’m not alone.

Many pianists are given useful tools… scales, chords, pieces, theory… but very little guidance on how to use them musically or how to connect them all together. How does all this stuff help me?

So when you want to explore music for yourself, you’re left stranded staring at 88 keys wondering where to even start…

I didn’t need lots and lots of information…
I needed a clear, manageable method that let me USE all that stuff to make real music… without feeling lost.

That realisation changed how I approached teaching the piano and became what I now call…

The Room Technique

A Simple Way To Know What To Play - Without Getting Lost

Here’s the core idea.

Instead of sitting down at the piano and facing everything you could possibly play, you start with a small, contained musical idea.

That idea becomes your room.

Inside that room, you’re free to explore.
You’re not guessing or wondering what you’re “allowed” to play.
You know where you are.

What A “Room” Actually Is

Inside a room, you might have:

 1. A short, manageable musical pattern
2. A few limited techniques you can actually use
3. A small number of hand positions

That's it. Nothing more!

By limiting what’s inside the room, you can take the time to get properly familiar with it.

Familiarity builds confidence.
Confidence leads to creativity.

Why This Works

If you’ve been learning for years but still don’t feel musical, this is usually why.

You may know scales, chords, exercises, techniques…
But none of it feels connected.

Lots of small jigsaw pieces, but no clear musical picture.

The Room Technique removes that problem.

You know exactly what’s inside your room.
You start from one clear musical idea, use just the techniques needed to play it, then shut the door and explore.

That’s what makes it feel manageable.

And once you’re inside the room and settled in:

You stop thinking
Your hands relax
Your ear takes over and your own musical ideas start to appear

Time fades away as you stop thinking about what you should be practising.

You’re just playing.

This Is What Creative Piano Patterns Is Built Around

Creative Piano Patterns is a collection of carefully designed rooms.

Pick one you like, step inside, and start playing.

There's no pressure to get everything right or master everything.

Just a clear process you can return to whenever you want something musical to play… or simply want to relax at the piano.

And this isn’t theory.

Below is James, a real beginner, using just one or two simple patterns from the course to create music that genuinely sounds musical.

This is the Room Technique doing exactly what it’s designed to do.

Creative Piano Patterns

Have a listen to James... a beginner... and notice how relaxed and musical he sounds

Play Video

James uses just 2 of the over 30 patterns to create and play his own music. Everything he plays here is his own creation.

As a teacher, hearing James play like this is extremely rewarding!

Here’s what he had to say about Creative Piano Patterns…

“I’m a beginner and I wanted to be able to play music that would sound nice reasonably quickly.

“These patterns work so well, I can play them slowly and they still sound great. They allow me to pause, find the right note, and keep playing, all while still playing beautiful music.

“It’s the first time I’ve played and had family come over and tell me… ‘Wow, that sounds great, you’ve really improved!’

“Thanks, Josef!”

Here's Arjen who had a similar experience using a different pattern and applying the “Room Technique”

Here’s what Arjen said about his experience in Creative Piano Patterns…

“This pattern really gives me a kind of film theme feeling, like Hans Zimmer.

"The chords of this pattern are very emotional and give you the vibe of the tune directly from the start. And it never gets boring, even when I play it a lot.”

“And there are so many ways to play variations of each pattern. You can even make it harder, and make sound bigger. There are so many different ways to use each pattern.”

Creative Piano Patterns 2.0

A Musical Library That Shows You What To Play... And How To Make It Your Own

creative piano patterns 2 (1)

Creative Piano Patterns 2.0 is a collection of musical starting points designed to help you sit down at the piano and start playing... without feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to begin.

Each pattern gives you a small, contained musical idea you can learn, and then explore freely.

Rather than a step-by-step course that you “work through” from the beginning... Creative Piano Patterns is a musical Pick & Choose library. Each pattern is a new “room” you can step into and explore.

You can dip in anywhere you like... choose a pattern that inspires you and step into your clear musical space, then let the music develop from there.

And just like James and Arjen discovered, this course is about giving you many different ways to let go and experience the freedom of playing beautiful music, without wondering how.

Below, you can see how Creative Piano Patterns is organised into Series, making it easy to explore the library and dive straight in.

cpp module 01

The 'Essential' Series

Just getting started at the piano? Or unsure whether you’re ready to dive straight into patterns yet?

This short introductory series guides you through the very basics as if we’re starting out together. The goal is simple… to give you the confidence you need to step into the rest of the course and start playing music, without feeling lost or out of your depth.

cpp module 02

The 'Beginner' Series

6 Patterns

These six patterns are designed as the natural next step once the basics are in place.

They use simpler techniques, but still pack a musical punch and feel satisfying to play. Use them to build confidence at the piano and experience what it feels like to play real music, just at a more manageable level.

cpp module 03

The 'Blues' Series

6 Patterns

There’s nothing like a bit of Blues or Boogie Woogie on the piano to turn heads and feel that energy at the keys.

It’s super fun and sounds great… but it’s also powerful for another important reason. It builds a specific core skill that aspiring pianists struggle with the most. Its why I teach this style to all my students, and why this approach is built directly into these six patterns.

cpp module 04

The Kick-Ass Series

18 Patterns

This is where the course truly comes to life.
Eighteen rich, musical patterns you can choose from and dive into, with the confidence that whatever you play will sound great at the piano.

These patterns are designed to give you both structure and freedom. Start with a great-sounding idea that speaks to you, learn it, play it, then gradually make it your own and lose yourself in the music.

This is where James and Arjen (and many others inside the course) found the patterns that resonated with them and created such beautiful pieces.

cpp module 05

The Creative Series

3 Patterns - 10 Lessons

These three extended patterns, exclusive to Creative Piano Patterns 2.0, focus entirely on creativity and expression using the Room Technique.

Each pattern unfolds across multiple lessons and is designed to give you huge musical freedom from a single, easy-to-learn idea. It might sound complex on paper, but we take it step by step so you feel confident at every stage.

This series is about discovering the musician inside you. If you have that urge to walk up to any piano, sit down, let go, and play music that genuinely turns heads… these patterns were made for you.

To Help You... You Also Have Access To Your Piano Practice Companion.

play along (1)

Play-Along Sessions

(Included With Every Pattern)

Each pattern in Creative Piano Patterns comes with a dedicated play-along session you can use whenever you want extra guidance or structure.

These sessions let you practise alongside me while you get familiar with a pattern, explore variations, or settle into the feel of the music. You can slow things down, loop small sections, change key, and clearly see what’s being played on the keyboard.

Nothing is rushed, and nothing is hidden.

With over 30 patterns, each with its own play-along session, you always have the option to return, revisit, and refine a pattern at your own pace… or simply switch the guidance off and explore on your own when you’re ready.

What You’ll Experience Inside Creative Piano Patterns

As you spend time with Creative Piano Patterns, you’ll start to notice things like:

  • Sitting down at the piano and knowing where to begin, instead of hesitating
  • Feeling relaxed at the keys, even if you haven’t played for a few days
  • Playing slowly and still sounding musical
  • Letting your ear guide you more than your head
  • Exploring ideas without feeling like you’re “doing it wrong”

  • Having a handful of go-to musical ideas you can always return to

"I'm so glad I found this course! I'm 63 yrs old and have been trying to learn the piano off and on most of my adult life. But whenever someone asked me to play, if I didn't have the sheet music of what I'd been practicing in front of me, I couldn't play a thing. It was so tedious and frustrating. But these lessons show you how to play improvisationally, something I've always wanted to learn but didn't know how to ask for.

The patterns are great for developing hand coordination and I'm finally getting a feel for rhythm. The patterns sound lovely too. I sound like I really know how to play.

It's all just so much more fun! And Josef explains it all so patiently but in a fun, light-hearted manner. If his enthusiasm and encouragement for making beautiful music doesn't infect you, you better check your pulse."
